NDSU Baseball Tops Oral Roberts in Finale to Win Road Series

TULSA, Okla. – The North Dakota State baseball team grinded out an 8-6 win in the series finale over Oral Roberts on Sunday afternoon at J.L. Johnson Stadium.

With the win, the Bison (7-16, 4-2 Summit) have now won each of their first two Summit League series of the season after taking two of three at Omaha last week to open conference play.

Sam Canton led the way for NDSU going 2-of-5 at the plate with two runs and a season-high four RBI. Jake Schaffner also went 3-of-5 at the plate with two runs and one run RBI.

Reese Ligtenberg (1-1) provided 1.1 innings of relief with two strikeouts in the win and Joey Danielson picked up the save finishing out the final 1.1 frames with one strikeout. Landon Koenig made the start on the hill with two strikeouts over 3.0 innings.

After Oral Roberts (9-14, 1-4 Summit) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second frame, Canton responded for the Bison with his first home run of the season in the third inning. The three-run shot stole the lead, 3-2. Kyle Booker answered in the bottom half for the Golden Eagles with a two-run home run of his own before Oral Roberts tacked on an RBI single and RBI sacrifice fly to regain the advantage, 6-3, after three complete frames.

The Bison pushed back in the fourth trimming the deficit down to one, 6-5, following an RBI sacrifice fly from Will Busch and an RBI triple off the bat of Schaffner. NDSU continued to surge into the sixth frame scoring three runs on three hits. Canton and Colten Becker both connected on RBI singles before Davis Hamilton scored on a passed ball to put the Bison in front, 8-6. NDSU went on to close out Oral Roberts over the final three innings to secure the 8-6 win.

NDSU will continue Summit League play beginning a three-game series at St. Thomas on Thursday. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
