NDSU Baseball Grinds Out 3-2 Win at Creighton

OMAHA, Neb. – Sam Canton connected on a clutch RBI single in the ninth inning to help push the North Dakota State baseball team past Creighton, 3-2, on Tuesday night at Charles Schwab Field Omaha.
Creighton (19-9, 2-1 Big East) scored the first run of the night with a bases-loaded walk in the first inning before Davis Hamilton reached on an error to score Jake Schaffner in the third to tie the contest, 1-1. Luke Shannahan then stole the lead for NDSU (10-18, 7-4 Summit) in the sixth after he delivered an RBI single into center field to make the score 2-1.
The Bluejays, who entered the week receiving votes in the USA Today Top 25 Coaches' Poll, once again tied the contest, 2-2, with an RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Tate Gillen. Both teams then battled through two more scoreless frames before Canton connected on an RBI single up the middle to send Hamilton home to regain the lead, 3-2. Danny Lachenmayer finished out the final inning on the mound with one strikeout to help the Bison secure the 3-2 midweek win.
NDSU totaled six hits as a team with Schaffner, Hamilton and Becker each posting one hit and one run apiece. The Bison also snapped the Bluejays' 17-game midweek win streak.
NDSU combined to use eight different pitchers with Garrett Shupe making the start tossing one strikeout over 1.0 innings. Cade Wiegert (1-0) earned his first win as a Bison with one strikeout over 1.0 innings, while Lachenmayer picked up his fifth save of the season appearing in the final inning with one strikeout.
NDSU will be back in action hosting St. Thomas on Friday night. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m., at Newman Outdoor Field.
