DAVIDSON, N.C. – North Dakota State wrestling recorded a pair of victories at the Davidson Duals on Friday at Belk Arena, defeating Bucknell 20-19 on a tiebreaker before shutting out Davidson 45-0. The Bison fell to Lock Haven 18-15 in the finale.
A trio of Bison went 3-0 on the day with #17
Ezekiel Witt, #24
Max Petersen and
Devin Wasley all recording three wins. Witt started the day with a pin of Bucknell's Kade Davidheiser in the second period, which also proved to be the deciding criteria in the tiebreaker win over Bucknell.
Witt then recorded another pin to start the dual against Davidson, taking down Brady Joling in the first period. The redshirt freshman wrapped the day with a 5-3 win over Lock Haven's Curtis Nelson.
Petersen recorded an 8-3 win over Bucknell's Riley Bower and then had a major decision win over Anderson Heap of Davidson. Petersen's big win came against Lock Haven as he upset #20 Lucas Kapusta with an 8-3 decision.
Wasley recorded the biggest upset of the day in his first match, as he dominated #10 Dillon Bechtold of Bucknell, including a rideout in the second period, winning 5-0. Wasley then recorded a 15-0 tech fall over Dylan Smith in the Davidson dual, before a 5-2 win over Tucker Hogan of Lock Haven in the finale.
In the early dual against Bucknell, #31
Tristan Daugherty extended NDSU's lead to 9-0 with a 15-8 win over Bryce Manera. After Petersen's win at 149,
Gavin Drexler added bonus points with an 11-2 win over Cade Wirnsberger, extending NDSU's lead to 16-4. Bucknell pushed the dual to a tie at 19-19 with two bonus-point decisions and two other wins, but NDSU claimed the tiebreaker with the only pin in the match.
Against Davidson, Daugherty followed up Witt's pin with a tech fall of Luke Passarelli.
Michael Olson then had a major decision before Petersen's win. Drexler followed Petersen with a 4-1 win over Tanner Peake, avenging a loss earlier this month at the Southern Scuffle.
In the second half of the dual,
Boeden Greenley recorded a tech fall before
Max Magayna's 7-1 win. In his only match of the day,
Andrew McMonagle won by major decision over Marc Koch at 184. Following Wasley's tech fall,
Shilo Jones picked up a win by forfeit to give NDSU their second shutout of the season and first shutout of a Division I opponent since November 29, 2008 when the Bison won 38-0 vs. Portland State in Rochester, Minnesota.
In the final dual of the day, the Bison fell behind as the Bald Eagles won five of the first seven matches. However, NDSU started a comeback at 184 as #27
Aidan Brenot picked up a 2-0 win over Sam Gautreau. Following Wasley's win, the Bison were within a pin of another tiebreaker win, but
Shilo Jones was unable to secure a fall, picking up a 4-2 win to cap the day.
North Dakota State returns home to the Scheels Center, as the Bison take on California Baptist in the first of three-straight duals at home to close out the home schedule for the 25-26 season. The Bison host the Lancers on Sunday, January 25, with the dual set to get underway at 1 p.m. inside the Sanford Health Athletic Complex.
