NDSU Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Omaha in Home Opener

FARGO, N.D. – After playing their first 27 straight games on the road, the North Dakota State baseball team made its home debut splitting a doubleheader against Omaha, 5-6, and, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field.

In game one, the Mavericks (13-18, 8-6 Summit) plated six runs over the first three innings, including four runs in the third to open up a 6-0 lead after Cardale Dick capped the frame with a two-run single up the middle. The contest then went scoreless for two frames until Dante Smith launched a two RBI home run to right field to cut the deficit to 6-2 in the sixth inning. Colten Becker closed the frame for the Bison (6-23, 3-8 Summit) with a solo home run to right center to make the score 6-3. The Bison went on to add two more runs on an RBI sacrifice fly from Smith in the seventh and Becker scoring on a throwing error in the eighth, but went on to drop the contest, 6-5.

NDSU totaled seven hits as a team with Chase Womack going 2-of-4 at the plate with one RBI, while Smith added three RBI with one run and one hit.

Parker Puetz (1-4) made the start with two strikeouts over 3.0 innings. Sheamus Ryan closed out the game with a season-best 6.0 scoreless innings and four strikeouts.

In game two, Bennett Freiter got the Bison off to a fast start after he sent Womack home on an RBI ground out to make the score 1-0 in the second. Kaden Connor extended the lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning with an RBI single up the middle.

NDSU then cracked the game open in the fifth frame after Becker delivered an RBI single to right field. Kyle Law finished the inning with a three-run homer off the left field foul pole to increase the edge to 5-0. Omaha got the board in the sixth inning after Jackson Trout got home on an error to cut the lead to 5-1. Blake Timmons answered for NDSU in the bottom half with an RBI single of his own into right field to stretch the lead to 6-1. Zak Szabo closed out the final 3.0 innings on the mound to help the Bison secure the 6-1 win.

NDSU posted 11 hits as a team with Law recording a season-best three hits on four appearances to go along with two RBI and two runs.

Jonah Walker (1-3) earned his first win of the season with two strikeouts over 6.0 innings. Szabo picked up his first career save as a Bison with four strikeouts over 3.0 scoreless innings.

NDSU will be back in action at Minnesota on Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m.
