The Bison (11-29, 7-13 Summit) opened an early 5-1 lead in the second inning after scoring five runs on four hits. Tommy Simon started the big inning with an RBI sacrifice fly to right field before Diego Trujillo delivered an RBI double. Evan Gustafson then added a two-run single and Dante Smith finished the frame with an RBI single of his own.
After both teams traded runs in the third and fourth innings, the Bears (14-34, 11-13 Summit) cut the edge in half with a Logan Pruski RBI single up the middle to make the score 6-3 in the seventh. Simon answered for the Bison in the bottom half with his first career home run. The grand slam increased the Bison lead up to 10-3. NDSU then cracked the game open after Trujillo scored on a ground out and Smith blasted an RBI triple to stretch the lead to 12-3 in the seventh. The Bears fought back pushing across six runs over the final two frames, but the Bison went on to close out the 12-9 victory.
The Bison totaled 12 hits as a team with three players logging multiple hits. Smith narrowly missed hitting for the cycle after posting four hits in five appearances to go along with three RBI and one run. The Ajax, Ontario native posted two singles, one double and one triple. Simon also added a career-best five RBI with one run and one hit.
Garrett Shupe made the start with four strikeouts and two walks over 4.0 innings. Zak Szabo (3-3) earned the win tossing three strikeouts with one walk over 2.2 frames. Cade Wiegert and Easton Reimers also both made appearances with one strikeout each.
NDSU will wrap up its series with Northern Colorado tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
