Fifth-Inning Rally Pushes Iowa Past North Dakota State

IOWA CITY, Iowa--The Iowa Hawkeyes rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and went on to a 4-1 victory over North Dakota State in college baseball Wednesday, April 20.
Iowa (15-16) started the rally with a Skyler Moss leadoff double and a base on balls to Andy Lytle. Nate Yoho doubled to score Moss with the eventual game-winning run, and Dusty Napoleon singled in Lytle to put the Hawkeyes up 3-0.
Yoho scored on an infield out before Bison reliever Shane Bushland struck out pinch hitter Matt Wooldrik to end the rally.
North Dakota State (2-29-1) scored its only run in the top of the sixth. Nathan Thomas led off with a single into center field. Two outs later, Matt Freudenthal scored Thomas with a single into left field.
Both teams had six hits in the game. Iowa's Moss was the only player with multiple hits, finishing 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. He singled in the first, moved to third on a walk and wild pitch, and scored on an infield out.
Bison starter Terry Tchida lasted 4 2/3 innings. He allowed four runs on four hits, struck out a season-high five batters, but walked a season-high seven hitters and dropped to 0-5 on the year.
Bushland threw 3 1/3 innings of relief for NDSU. He allowed two hits, one walk, and struck out three.
Iowa left-hander Jeff Maitland worked three innings of one-hit ball and struck out three batters for the Hawkeyes in his first start in more than a year after arm surgery.
North Dakota State is scheduled to play a three-game series at Northern Iowa this weekend. Game 1 is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 22, at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo, Iowa.
The doubleheader scheduled for Saturday, April 23, has been shortened to a single game.
