Gagner Shuts Door, Bison Rally Falls Short at Northern Iowa

WATERLOO, Iowa--North Dakota State right-hander Tyler Gagner shut the door with five strikeouts in three innings of relief, but Northern Iowa held on for a 14-9 win over the Bison in college baseball Friday, April 22, at Riverfront Stadium.
Gagner came on in the sixth inning and held the Panthers (15-21) scoreless after UNI jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the fourth inning and a 14-2 advantage in the fifth.
North Dakota State (2-30-1) scored once in the eighth and rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth with the help of three UNI errors before the Panthers turned to reliever Mark Bennett to shut the door.
NDSU's pitching staff issued 12 walks in the game, including three by starting pitcher Jay Mitchell (0-5), who allowed three runs on one hit before leaving after one-third of an inning.
Northern Iowa starter Jeff Hille fanned seven in seven innings of work. He allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits and walked three while improving to 3-4 on the year.
NDSU first baseman Reid Arnold was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Bison shortstop Matt Mossey was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and three runs scored.
Panther catchers Nate Trumm and Brandon Crisp were a combined 5-for-6 in the fourth spot in the UNI batting order. Trumm drove in two runs and scored once before leaving midway through the game.
The start of the game was delayed 33 minutes because of rain.
Game 2 of the series is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, April 23.
