
Western Illinois Sweeps North Dakota State

MACOMB, Ill.--Western Illinois swept a college baseball doubleheader from North Dakota State at Vince Grady Field on Saturday, April 9. The Leathernecks held on for a 5-4 win in the opener before winning the nightcap 7-3.
In the opener, Western Illinois (7-20) scored four runs off Bison starter Brandon Goltz in the bottom of the first inning and took a 4-1 lead.
Kole Zimmerman's two-run homer in the third brought NDSU (2-21-1) within a run at 4-3, and the Bison tied it in the sixth with an unearned run.
The Leathernecks scored the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh on a double steal. Jim Sanew was safe at third base and Zimmerman's throw went into left field to score Sanew.
Western Illinois lefty John Matlick worked the seventh, eighth and ninth for the win. He struck out three.
Goltz took the loss for NDSU and dropped to 0-5. He struck out the first batter he faced before allowing four runs, all earned, on three hits and three walks.
North Dakota State was down 3-0 in the seven-inning nightcap before rallying to tie the game in the fourth inning.
Tim Erickson led off with a double, Nathan Thomas was hit by a pitch, and Zimmerman doubled home Erickson to get the wheels turning.
Reid Arnold had an RBI single and Matt Mossey's sacrifice fly tied the game.
The Leathernecks got all three runs back in the bottom of the fourth to go up 6-3, and NDSU put only two runners on base the rest of the way.
Western Illinois lefty Clint Buchen pitched six innings for the win. He allowed three runs on three hits, walked one and struck out five.
Shane Bushland worked all six innings on the mound for the Bison. He allowed seven runs, 10 hits, walked one and struck out two.
The Bison committed four errors in the game and seven on the day.
Games 3 and 4 of the series are scheduled for Sunday, April 10, beginning at noon. The teams will play another nine-inning and seven-inning doubleheader.
