FARGO, N.D.--The Creighton Bluejays used two big run-scoring innings to sweep a college baseball doubleheader from North Dakota State by identical scores of 7-4 on Wednesday, May 18, at Newman Outdoor Field.
Creighton, ranked 30th in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll and now 41-13 overall, erupted for four runs in the second inning of the first game and then bounced back from a 4-0 deficit in the nightcap with a five-run spurt in the top of the third.
North Dakota State (8-40-1) was down 7-1 going into the seventh inning of the opener, but scored three unearned runs to pull within 7-4.
Bison shortstop Matt Mossey and first baseman Kole Zimmerman represented the tying and winning runs, but Creighton closer Brandon Bird came on to retire both batters and pick up his eighth save of the year.
Ryan Langlais was 2-for-3 to lead the Bison attack, and Gavin Hofer was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
Starting pitcher Derek Ford allowed six runs on seven hits in five innings of work, walking three and striking out three in the loss. Ford dropped to 2-3 on the year.
North Dakota State jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second game with second-inning RBI singles from Nathan Thomas and Tim Erickson, and a two-run double to the left field corner by Charles Magedanz.
Creighton answered in the top of the third. Colin Shockey reached on a strikeout and a wild pitch to lead off, and the Bluejays got five straight singles to tie the game at 4 before a wild pitch scored the go-ahead run.
An unearned run in the sixth and a solo home run by Creighton designated hitter Zach Daeges in the seventh provided the final margin of 7-4.
Bison starter Brandon Goltz allowed five runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. He walked three and struck out three while dropping to 0-6 on the year.
Creighton's Scott Reese pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief for his fifth save of the year, and reliever Teddy Ogilvie was the winner with 2 2/3 scoreless innings.
Mossey, who was 1-for-4 in the opener, hit 2-for-4 in the nightcap to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Magedanz also finished 2-for-4 for the Bison in the second game.
North Dakota State and Creighton are scheduled to close out the three-game series with a single nine-inning game Thursday, May 19, beginning at 1 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field.
