FARGO, N.D.--Left-hander Justin Hayes struck out eight and went the distance to help Minnesota-Duluth to a 4-1 win over North Dakota State in college baseball Friday, May 6, at Newman Outdoor Field.
Hayes, a native of nearby Moorhead, Minn., threw 140 pitches in nine innings of work and improved to 3-1 on the year. He scattered six hits and issued only one base on balls.
Both teams scored once in the third and Minnesota-Duluth (23-21) jumped ahead with a three-run fifth inning sparked by the bottom of the order.
Alex Conboy led off the inning with a triple to the wall in left-center field, Tom Paitich singled Conboy in, and leadoff man Tony Doherty pushed a base-hit bunt past the mound that compounded when NDSU second baseman Tyrus Powe threw the ball wild past first base.
The error put runners on second and third to set up an RBI ground out by Nic Spaeth and a sacrifice fly by Tim Garceau.
North Dakota State catcher Nathan Thomas reached third base with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, but beyond that the Bison didn't advance a runner past second the rest of the way. NDSU stranded nine base runners in the game.
Powe and Matt Mossey each hit 2-for-4 in the game and Tim Erickson was 1-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 11 games.
Powe has hit safely in 8 of his last 11 official at-bats including a 6-for-8 series against UMD.
Starting pitcher Jake Laber took the loss and dropped to 1-5 on the year. Laber worked four innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out three.
NDSU's Ryan Williams threw 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts, and Neil Wagner struck out the side in the top of the ninth to hold the Bison within three runs.
North Dakota State (6-36-1) is scheduled to play a four-game series at Valparaiso next Friday, May 13, and Saturday, May 14. Doubleheaders both days are scheduled for noon starts.
