
Iowa Sweeps Doubleheader From Bison; Series Wraps Up With Saturday Twinbill

IOWA CITY, Iowa--The Iowa Hawkeyes swept a college baseball doubleheader from North Dakota State on Friday, March 23, winning the first game 6-5 and taking the nightcap 8-0.
Iowa improved to 7-5 on the season and North Dakota State fell to 2-11. The teams will wrap up the four-game series with another doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
The Hawkeyes won the opening game in the 11th inning when Jason White led off with his fourth walk of the game, moved to third on two infield outs, then stole home.
Bison outfielder Kole Zimmerman was 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored in the extra-innings loss. Zimmerman's double in the sixth tied the game at 4, and he walked and scored in the eighth to tie the game at 5.
NDSU left-hander Shannon Ekermans took the loss despite 3 1/3 innings of hitless relief. He came on with the bases loaded an one out in the eighth and escaped with two fly ball outs.
The Bison advanced runners to second base in the 10th and 11th innings, but Iowa reliever Mike Schurz struck out four batters in the final two frames to improve to 3-0 on the year.
In the nightcap, Iowa's Steve Turnbull pitched all seven innings of the two-hit shutout. He struck out seven and walked none, facing just one batter over the minimum.
Meanwhile, battery mate Dusty Napoleon hit 3-for-3 with five RBIs. Napoleon's two-run single in the first held up for the win, and he added run-scoring singles in the fifth and sixth innings.
Travis Sweet also had three hits and stole two bases for the Hawkeyes, while Matt Mossey and Greg Plecki each singled for the Bison.
Mossey (0-2) was the losing pitcher, allowing five runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out five.
