EDINBURG, Texas--Matt Shepherd threw a complete-game two-hitter to lead Texas-Pan American to a 4-0 victory over North Dakota State in Division I independent college baseball Saturday, March 31.
North Dakota State center fielder Greg Plecki and designated hitter Shannon Ekermans had the only hits off Shepherd, who struck out six and walked four to improve to 1-2 on the year.
Leighton Autrey's two-out solo home run in the fifth was the only run UTPA (12-22) needed. The Broncs added three runs in the sixth on a double by Osiel Flores, a sacrifice fly by Roly Gonzalez, and a single by Matt Guzman.
Starting pitcher Jeff Hille struck out five batters in six innings of work for NDSU (3-14). Hille allowed eight hits and walked one to drop to 0-4 on the season.
The rubber game of the series is scheduled for 12 p.m. Sunday, April 1, at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
