FARGO, N.D.--North Dakota State rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to defeat South Dakota State 6-3 in college baseball Friday night at Newman Outdoor Field.
Designated hitter Shannon Ekermans led off the Bison eighth with a single and moved to second on a Ryan Langlais sacrifice bunt.
After Kenny Beese came on to pinch run and right fielder Luke Otto was intentionally walked with two outs, Bison catcher Gavin Hofer laced his first pitch into right field to score Beese with the game-winning run.
NDSU first baseman Sebastian Miles followed with a single to left-center that plated Otto from second, and Hofer scored on an infield error for the final margin.
Shortstop Matt Mossey came on to pitch the final inning for his first save of the season. NDSU starter Jeff Hille got his first win in eight decisions with a season-high seven strikeouts in eight innings. It was his longest outing of the year.
NDSU's late rally spoiled a strong pitching performance by South Dakota State starter Matt Bowman, who lasted 7 2/3 innings. Bowman threw 60 of his first 70 pitches for strikes. He was responsible for all six NDSU runs and allowed nine hits while striking out five.
North Dakota State (9-23) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Mossey led off with a walk, moved to third on a Greg Plecki single, and scored on Ekermans' sacrifice fly. Plecki moved to second on an infield ground out before scoring on Kole Zimmerman's first of two singles.
South Dakota State (24-16) scored three runs with two outs in the third to go ahead. Tyson Fisher drew a walk, moved to third on a single by Nick Adams, and scored when Adams' hit was misplayed in the outfield. Craig Parry followed with a two-run triple to center field to put the Jacks up 3-2.
NDSU tied it in the fourth when Zimmerman led off with a single, moved to second on Otto's sac bunt, advanced to third on Hofer's bloop single into right field, and scored on Miles' single to center field.
Zimmerman, Hofer and Miles were all 2-for-4 for North Dakota State. Adams and Parry each had two hits for South Dakota State.
The start of the game was delayed 23 minutes due to rain, and the teams played through on-and-off showers all night without interruption.
The four-game series continues with a noon doubleheader Saturday.
