FORT WAYNE, Ind.--Ryan Langlais homered in both games and Kole Zimmerman broke North Dakota State's career doubles record as the Bison swept a Summit League baseball doubleheader at IPFW by scores of 7-3 and 8-7 on Saturday, April 19.
Langlais hit a grand slam with one out in the ninth inning of the opening game to break a 3-3 tie and send North Dakota State to its first Summit League victory. His sacrifice fly in the third scored NDSU's only run until Sebastian Miles' two-run single in the eighth plated Langlais and Kenny Beese with the tying runs.
Shane Bushland pitched the final two scoreless innings and upped his record to 4-2 with the victory. NDSU starter Matt Bowar allowed three runs on eight hits with two walks in the first seven innings.
North Dakota State (9-21, 2-8) strung together five straight singles and took a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap before Zimmerman led off the second with his school-record 45th career double and scored on a Langlais single to make it 5-0. The former record holder was Matt Mann, who hit 44 doubles in three seasons from 2000-02.
IPFW (8-23-1, 4-7) plated single runs in the second and third before Langlais hit a two-run home run in the fourth and Kyle Harrison drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth for an 8-2 Bison lead.
NDSU starter Ben Mathiason struck out five and issued no walks in 6 2/3 innings, but he ran into trouble in the seventh. IPFW got six hits off Mathiason, the last four all with two outs to make it 8-5, before Bushland came on to get his second save of the year.
Bushland's only batter, Mark Carden, hit a two-run single into left-center field that made it 8-7, but Harrison's throw back to the infield caught Jimmy Gilliland off second base to end the game.
Langlais hit 4-for-8 with eight RBIs and three runs scored in the doubleheader. Second baseman Chris Lovas was the only other NDSU player with multiple hits in the first game. He was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Four players each had two hits for NDSU in the nightcap. Langlais, Miles and Chad Berg were all 2-for-4, and David Williams was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
IPFW's Carden and Jared Davis were both 3-for-4 in the second game. Gilliland hit 3-for-4 for the Mastodons in the opener.
The four-game series is scheduled to conclude with a single nine-inning game at noon Sunday, April 20.
