FARGO, N.D. ? North Dakota State freshman soccer player Shannon Brooks is currently in Guatemala training with the full Guatemalan national team.
The Monrovia, Calif. native impressed the coaches when she was named to the Guatemala Under-20 national team earlier this summer and earned an invitation to try out for the senior national squad.
Brooks is eligible for the squad because her mother, Susana Ebeck, was born and raised in Guatemala.
The team is training twice a day as well as doing strength and conditioning every other day. A forward and midfielder for the Bison, Brooks has been playing all over the field with the Guatemalan team.
In an email Brooks wrote “So far my experience in Guatemala has been great. It's very intense and different from what I'm used to.”
Brooks will be training in Guatemala for the next week and a half, returning to Fargo in time for the game against Drake on August 21.
NDSU kicks off the 2009 season with an exhibition game against Augustana Sunday, August 16 at 4 p.m. at the Ellig Sports Complex.
