BEAUMONT, Texas--Cameron Campbell's three-run double in the first inning jump-started Lamar to a 12-5 victory over North Dakota State in college baseball Sunday, Feb. 28.

Lamar led 9-0 after three innings and starter Matison Smith struck out seven batters in seven innings of work for his second victory of the season.

Smith benefitted from a pair of double-play balls and faced the minimum through five innings before North Dakota State (1-2) scored a pair of unearned runs in the sixth.

NDSU got three more runs in the eighth. Back-to-back walks to Max Casper and Tanner Adam and a single by Justin Kline loaded the bases for pinch-hitter Eric Nutzhorn, who went to a full count before drawing a base on balls.

Two outs later, the Bison got an RBI single from Tyler Steen, and a bases-loaded walk to Kenny Beese on a 3-2 count that brought NDSU within 9-5.

Lamar (6-1) got all three runs back in the bottom of the eighth against reliever Simon Anderson, who got the first two outs but walked three of the next four batters.

Adam, Kline and Tim Jallen each had two hits and scored runs for North Dakota State. Starting pitcher Zach Wentz allowed five runs on five hits with two walks and one strikeout in the first two innings for the loss.

The Bison used seven pitchers in the game. Kirk Dehler, Mark Hermes and Colby Tognetti combined to hold Lamar scoreless in the fourth through seventh innings.

Aaron Buchanan was 3-for-6 and Ted Zentek was 3-for-5 to lead the Cardinals.

North Dakota State is scheduled to play a four-game series at Missouri State starting Friday, March 5, in Springfield, Mo.
