BEAUMONT, Texas--North Dakota State scored two runs in the top of the ninth and Anthony Kliniske struck out the side in the home half of the inning as the Bison won 10-9 to salvage a doubleheader split at Lamar in college baseball Saturday, Feb. 27. Lamar won the opener 9-7.
Klinske stuck out seven of the 12 batters he faced in 3 2/3 innings of relief to earn the victory. Freshman second baseman Wes Satzinger was 3-for-5 with a double and four RBIs to lead the Bison attack.
After North Dakota State blew a 7-1 lead in the first game of the doubleheader, it was Lamar (5-1) that blew an 8-2 advantage in the nightcap.
NDSU (1-1) scored five times in the fifth when right fielder Nic Obey, shortstop Max Casper, catcher Tanner Adam and left fielder Justin Kline strung together consecutive singles to start the inning.
First baseman Zach Wentz drew a bases-loaded walk and Satzinger pulled the Bison within 8-7 with a three-run double to center field.
Lamar went ahead 9-7 on Ryan Meade's double in the sixth, but NDSU pulled back within one on Satzinger's RBI single in the seventh.
Wentz and Satzinger both hit 2-for-5 in the opening game. Satzinger had an RBI double in his first collegiate at-bat in the first inning and scored on third baseman Jay Hartman's two-run single that gave NDSU an early 4-0 lead.
Lamar got an unearned run in the second before NDSU tacked on three more in the third. Satzinger delivered an RBI double and Obey hit a two-run homer to left field to make it 7-1.
The Cardinals took advantage of two walks, a hit batter and two wild pitches to get three runs back off Bison starter McHale Maristuen in the bottom of the third.
Lamar tacked on single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to tie it, and the Cardinals went ahead with a two-run homer by designated hitter Wade Mathis in the eighth inning.
Lamar relievers Jake Henderson and Cory Holley combined to face only two batters over the minimum in the fourth through ninth innings. Holley got his second win of the year.
Mathis was 3-for-4 with three RBIs for Lamar. Jason Mattila pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and took the loss for NDSU.
The teams are scheduled to close the three-game series with a single nine-inning game at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 28.
