
Missouri State Sweeps Doubleheader From North Dakota State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.--Missouri State got two strong starting pitching performances and scored 21 runs to sweep a college baseball doubleheader from North Dakota State at Hammons Field on Saturday, March 6.
Pat Doyle struck out five in a seven-inning complete game to win the opener 6-1, and Mike Kickham fanned 10 batters in the seven shutout innings as the Bears won the nine-inning nightcap 15-2.
Missouri State (3-6) hit three home runs in the late game, including a three-run shot by third baseman Beau Stoker that capped a six-run first inning.
The Bears extended their lead to 10-0 in the second inning with an RBI single from second baseman Kevin Medrano, who was 3-for-4 with four runs scored, and another three-run homer from outfielder Trevor Rogers, who was 2-for-4 with five RBIs in the game.
Missouri State reliever Sean Toler struck out all three batters he faced in the eighth before NDSU (2-4) got its only two runs against Tyler Bean in the top of the ninth on a wild pitch and passed ball.
NDSU starter Kirk Dehler (0-1) was responsible for nine runs on five hits with three walks and one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings. Colby Tognetti struck out five in 4 2/3 innings of relief.
In the first game, Missouri State broke open a 2-1 game in the middle innings.
A sacrifice fly by center fielder Aaron Conway gave Missouri State a 3-1 advantage in the third, and the Bears plated three more runs in the fourth with an RBI double from Rogers, a sac fly from designated hitter Tyler Paxson, and a solo home run from first baseman Tyler Ryun.
Right fielder Tyler Steen singled in NDSU's only run in the second inning. Steen was 2-for-3 to lead the Bison attack.
NDSU starter Mark Schroeder (0-1) took the loss allowing six runs on six hits with one walk and one strikeout in 3 1/3 innings. Mark Hermes struck out five batters in 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Shortstop Travis McCormack was 2-for-3 for Missouri State and six different players scored runs for the Bears in the first game.
North Dakota State and Missouri State are scheduled to close out the four-game series with a single nine-inning game at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 7.
