Bison Take 3 of 4 From Western Illinois on Opening Weekend

MACOMB, Ill.--Zach Wentz pitched seven innings and hit 4-for-6 with five RBIs to lead North Dakota State to a 14-7 victory over Western Illinois in Summit League baseball Sunday, April 11, at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.
Wentz extended his hitting streak to 14 straight games as North Dakota State improved to 11-14 overall and 3-1 in The Summit League. Western Illinois fell to 8-19 overall and 1-3 in the league.
North Dakota State took advantage of two Western Illinois errors in the first inning to score five unearned runs and take a 7-0 lead after one at-bat.
Wentz had an RBI double in the fourth to make it 8-1, and he added a two-run single in the seventh as the Bison took an 11-1 lead.
Wentz evened his record at 1-1 with the victory. He allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits with two walks and one strikeout.
Ben Bruggeman, Mark Ries and Colby Tognetti each pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief for the Bison. Ries entered to get a bases-loaded groundout in the eighth to preserve an 11-4 lead.
Wentz, who stayed in the game as the designated hitter, added another two-run single in NDSU's three-run ninth inning.
Second baseman Tanner Adam, catcher Justin Kline and first baseman Zach Heidmann each had two hits for NDSU. Adam hit .438 (7-for-16) with four runs scored as the Bison's leadoff hitter in the four-game series. He's hit safely in eight straight games.
Center fielder Dan Dispensa was 3-for-6 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Western Illinois attack.
Starting pitcher Beau Below (0-2) took the loss for the Fighting Leathernecks. Below allowed nine runs, three earned, on eight hits with three walks and one strikeout.
North Dakota State is scheduled to play its home opener against Dakota Wesleyan at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, at Newman Outdoor Field before traveling to Centenary for another four-game Summit League weekend series.
