
North Dakota State Drops Pair of 2-1 Games at IPFW

FORT WAYNE, Ind.--A.J. Christensen drove in both runs in the first game and scored the winning run in the second game as IPFW swept North Dakota State in a pair of 2-1 games Friday, April 23, in The Summit League.
Christensen was 3-for-4 in both games IPFW, which improved to 9-27 overall and 5-5 in the league. North Dakota State dropped to 13-20 overall and 3-7 in the league.
The teams played two 9-inning games due to the threat of rain coming Sunday, and they beat the showers by finishing both contests in less than two hours apiece. Neither team had more than eight hits in either game.
IPFW jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener when Cory Miller got a two-out single, stole second, and scored on Christensen's single.
NDSU put just two runners on base in the first four innings before Michael Riewer hit a leadoff homer in the fifth to tie the game.
The Mastodons won it in the bottom of the ninth when Miller hit a leadoff single and Christensen followed with a double.
Kyle Kingsley pitched all eight-plus innings for NDSU and dropped to 3-3 with the loss. Kingsley struck out six and allowed eight hits with no walks.
Nick Optiz pitched all nine innings for IPFW and evened his record at 3-3. Opitz had no strikeouts but held the Bison to three hits and issued only one walk.
North Dakota State took the first lead in the second game when Zach Wentz led off the fourth inning with a single, moved to second on Riewer's sacrifice bunt and scored on Eric Nutzhorn's single.
IPFW tied it in the fifth on a solo homer by Daren Boss and got the eventual winning run in the sixth. Christensen led off with a double, moved to third on a single by Shaun VanDriessche, and scored on Kurt Dudley's ground ball to shortstop.
The Bison got singles in the seventh and ninth but couldn't score.
IPFW starter Matt Antos struck out six and scattered seven hits over seven innings for his first win in six decisions, and Matt Ransbottom pitched the final two innings for his first save.
NDSU starter McHale Maristuen dropped to 1-6 with the loss. Maristuen allowed eight hits and had four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Jason Mattila pitched the final 2 2/3 scoreless innings for the Bison.
Tim Jallen was 3-for-4 to lead the Bison, and Wentz and Nutzhorn had two hits apiece.
North Dakota State and IPFW are scheduled to complete their four-game series with another doubleheader at 12 p.m. ET on Saturday, April 24.
