
Wentz Pitches Bison to Doubleheader Split at IPFW

FORT WAYNE, Ind.--Zach Wentz pitched a complete-game four-hitter to lead North Dakota State to a 9-0 victory over IPFW in the second game of a Summit League baseball doubleheader Saturday, April 24.
IPFW (10-28, 6-6) won the opening game 6-4 behind eight strong innings from starting pitcher Ryan August, who scattered eight hits and struck out seven.
North Dakota State (14-21, 4-8) nearly came back to win the opener with three runs in the ninth inning. Tim Jallen hit an RBI double, Kenny Beese delivered a run-scoring pinch-hit single, and an error plated another run before the final out.
Jallen was 3-for-4 and Tanner Adam and Eric Nutzhorn had two hits apiece in the first game for NDSU.
Bison starter Mark Hermes allowed four runs on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings and dropped to 1-2 with the loss.
NDSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead through three innings in the second game, and the Bison tacked on four runs in the seventh to put the game away.
Jay Hartman was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored, and Nutzhorn and Max Casper got two hits apiece for the Bison. Zach Heidmann hit a two-run triple to highlight NDSU's three-run second inning.
Wentz struck out four and walked only one to even his record at 2-2. IPFW starter Lucas Kesterton allowed five runs in five innings and dropped to 1-6 with the loss.
North Dakota State is scheduled to begin a 16-game homestand against the Minnesota Golden Gophers at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 28.
