FARGO, N.D.--Matt Puhl was 3-for-4 with five RBIs to lead Minnesota to an 11-6 come-from-behind victory over North Dakota State in college baseball Wednesday, April 28, before a crowd of 1,007 at Newman Outdoor Field.
Puhl's RBI single with one out in the seventh inning scored Michael Kvasnicka with the eventual winning run, and relievers Tim Ryan and Cullen Sexton combined to pitch the final three scoreless innings as the Golden Gophers upped their record to 17-24.
North Dakota State (14-22) took advantage of a steady 30 mph wind blowing out to left field to hit a season-high four home runs, and the Bison built a 5-1 lead through four innings.
The game was tied 1-1 before Tim Jallen led off the Bison third inning with a solo home run and Zach Wentz hit his team-leading fifth homer one out later to give NDSU a 3-1 lead.
Tanner Adam and Jay Hartman hit back-to-back homers to lead off the fourth inning, but the Bison managed just five hits the rest of the game.
Minnesota tied the game with a four-run sixth. Puhl delivered a two-run single to start the scoring, Kyle Geason drove in Puhl with a double, and Geason scored on Kurt Schlangen's single to make it 5-5.
The Gophers went ahead for the first time in the top of the seventh when A.J. Pettersen drew a leadoff walk, moved to third on Kvasnicka's double, and scored on Kyle Knudson's single.
NDSU pulled within 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh when Kenny Beese hit a leadoff double down the right-field line, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Tyler Steen's double-play ball.
Minnesota answered with four runs in the eighth. Knudson's bases-loaded single to left field scored two runs and Puhl delivered another two-run single with two outs.
Colby Tognetti, the third of seven NDSU pitchers, took the loss and dropped to 1-2 on the year. Tognetti was responsible for two runs on two hits with two walks and no strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning.
Kevin Kray, the third of five Minnesota pitchers, improved to 2-1 with the victory. Kray allowed one run on two hits with one walk and no strikeouts in one inning of work.
Schlangen was 3-for-5 for the Gophers, and Kvasnicka, Knudson and Nick O'Shea had two hits apiece.
Hartman was 3-for-4 for the Bison, and Jallen and Wentz both finished 2-for-4.
North Dakota State is scheduled to host Southern Utah in a four-game Summit League series beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 30.
