FARGO, N.D.--Brock Westphal was 4-for-5 with four RBIs to lead Southern Utah to a 9-3 victory over North Dakota State in the first game of a Summit League baseball doubleheader Saturday, May 1, at Newman Outdoor Field. The second game was canceled due to rain.

Matt Sanford and Bo Cuthbertson had three hits apiece for the Thunderbirds, who improved to 13-27 overall and 6-7 in The Summit League.

Zach Wentz hit his sixth home run of the year and finished 2-for-4 to lead North Dakota State, which fell to 14-23 overall and 4-9 in the league.

Southern Utah jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Cuthbertson, Marcus Romero and Sanford hit three straight one-out doubles and Westphal hit a two-out RBI single.

NDSU starter Kyle Kingsley was lifted in the second inning after one trip through the batting order. Kingsley allowed four runs on five hits and dropped to 3-4 with the loss.

The Bison pulled within 4-1 in the third with an unearned run, but Westphal delivered a two-out, two-run single in the fourth to put the Thunderbirds ahead 6-1.

That was all Southern Utah starter Kyle Melling needed. Melling struck out nine batters and walked none in 7 2/3 innings and improved to 3-2. Designated hitter Levi Swenson came in to strike out all four batters he faced in relief.

North Dakota State and Southern Utah are scheduled to play a 12 p.m. doubleheader Sunday, May 2.
