FARGO, N.D.--North Dakota State pounded out 31 hits to sweep a Summit League baseball doubleheader from Southern Utah by scores of 13-7 and 12-4 on Sunday, May 2, at Newman Outdoor Field.
North Dakota State (16-23, 6-9) hit three home runs in the first game, including Zach Heidmann's grand slam on a 3-2 count with two outs in the bottom of the eighth that broke a 7-7 tie. It was Heidmann's first homer of the year.
That made a winner of NDSU closer Anthony Kliniske, who missed a save opportunity in the top of the eighth but pitched two scoreless innings with two strikeouts to improve to 2-0.
Bison center fielder Michael Riewer hit a two-run homer in the second inning to start the scoring, but Southern Utah (13-29, 6-9) answered with a six-run third inning that saw the Thunderbirds score four unearned runs.
Designated hitter Nic Obey hit a two-run homer in the third to bring NDSU within 6-4, Max Casper hit an RBI single in the fourth, and the Bison tied it with a Jay Hartman double in the fifth.
Kenny Beese's infield single with two outs plated the go-ahead run for the Bison in the fifth, but Southern Utah got a leadoff walk to Bo Cuthbertson in the eighth and a two-out RBI single from catcher Taylor Shaw to tie the game at 7.
Seven different NDSU players had two hits in the first game. Obey and Zach Wentz each scored three runs.
Shaw was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Southern Utah in the opener. SUU reliever Braden Yardley gave up six runs on seven hits in four innings and dropped to 2-2 with the loss.
In the second game, NDSU trailed 2-1 before striking for three runs in the bottom of the third. The Bison put five straight base runners on with two outs and got a two-run single from Tyler Steen and an RBI single from Riewer to go ahead 4-2.
SUU pulled within 4-3 in the fourth when Brock Westphal hit a leadoff triple and scored on an error, but the Bison exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the inning to put the game out of reach.
NDSU sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth. Casper hit a leadoff double, Tim Jallen hit an infield single, and Wentz roped a two-run double to start the scoring. Casper had a two-run single in his second at-bat of the inning before a ground-ball double play ended the rally.
Steen was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Riewer was 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the second game for the Bison.
Wentz, NDSU's starting pitcher in Game 2, scattered nine hits, struck out four and walked none in a complete-game effort to improve to 3-2 on the year.
Westphal and Cuthbertston both had two hits for SUU in the second game. Starting pitcher Steve Johnson allowed five runs on seven hits in three innings and dropped to 3-4 with the loss.
NDSU had 15 his in the first game and 16 in the second game, one shy of the season-high 17 against Lamar on Feb. 27 in the second game of the season.
North Dakota State is scheduled to host Concordia Moorhead at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 4.
