Furmanek Too Much for Bison as ORU Takes Series Opener, 9-2

TULSA, Okla.--Seth Furmanek pitched 8 1/3 innings and hit two home runs to lead Oral Roberts to a 9-2 victory over North Dakota State in the first of a four-game Summit League baseball series Thursday, May 20, at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
Furmanek struck out seven, walked three, and held the Bison (21-28, 10-14) to four hits. He hit a solo homer in the second inning to put ORU ahead 1-0 and then added a three-run homer in his second at-bat in the third inning.
Oral Roberts (30-24, 17-8) scored six runs with two outs in the third. After a pair of ground outs to start the inning, leadoff man Joey Winiecki got a bunt single, stole second and scored on P.J. Sequeira's double to the gap. ORU sent 11 batters to the plate.
Furmanek had a no-hitter through 5 2/3 innings before Tim Jallen doubled to left-center field. He moved to third on a wild pitch but did not score.
NDSU trailed 8-0 before finally scoring in the eighth. Michael Riewer led off with a double, moved to third on Jay Hartman's single through the left side, and scored on Max Casper's infield ground ball.
ORU answered in the eighth when Winiecki was hit by a pitch and scored on Tyler Saladino's two-out single.
The Bison scored in the ninth when pinch hitter Eric Nutzhorn drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on Tanner Adam's single, moved to third on a walk to Riewer, and scored on Hartman's ground ball.
NDSU starter Kyle Kingsley dropped to 4-6 with the loss. Kingsley allowed seven runs on seven hits with no walks and one strikeout in 2 2/3 innings.
Nroth Dakota State and Oral Roberts are scheduled to play a 2 p.m. doubleheader Friday, May 21, and the series finale is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, May 22.
