Bison Drop Two at ORU, Fall Out of Summit League Race

TULSA, Okla.--North Dakota State's run for a spot in the Summit League baseball tournament was ended with 13-3 and 4-1 losses to Oral Roberts in a doubleheader Friday, May 21, at J.L Johnson Stadium.
North Dakota State fell to 21-30 overall and 10-16 in the league, two full games behind fourth-place Oakland and IPFW with one left to play. Oral Roberts improved to 32-24 overall and 19-8 in the league.
NDSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opener with RBI singles from Nic Obey and Michael Riewer in the third inning. But ORU answered with six runs in the bottom of the third and used a five-run eighth to end the game by the 10-run rule.
Riewer added an RBI double in the eighth and finished 2-for-4, and Zach Wentz was 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the opener.
Bison starter McHale Maristuen dropped to 1-8 with the loss. Maristuen allowed five runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings.
Colby Price hit one of ORU's three home runs and was 3-for-4 with two doubles, five RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Golden Eagles in the first game.
ORU starter Dallas Beeler improved to 2-0 with the win. Beeler allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in five innings.
In the nightcap, ORU's Bryce Smolen pitched a seven-inning complete game with 12 strikeouts to improve to 8-3 on the year. Smolen did not allow a runner past second base until the seventh inning.
Max Casper had two of NDSU's four hits. Tim Jallen singled in the first inning and Michael Riewer had an RBI single with two outs in the seventh to score Zach Heidmann after a walk and two wild pitches.
Bison starter Mark Hermes dropped to 1-3 with the loss. Hermes allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts in four innings.
North Dakota State and Oral Roberts finish the four-game series at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 22.
