MINNEAPOLIS - Junior right-hander John Straka went the distance with eight strikeouts to lead North Dakota State to a 7-0 win over Minnesota in college baseball Tuesday, March 20, at the Metrodome.

Nick Colwell was 3-for-5 with two doubles, and Wes Satzinger and Max Casper had two hits apiece for North Dakota State, which improved to 13-5 with its seventh straight victory. Minnesota fell to 9-12.

Straka walked two and allowed six hits while evening his record at 2-2 on the year. It was his third career shutout and the first since his freshman year May 2009 in a 4-0 home win over Western Illinois.

North Dakota State got the only run it needed in the first inning when Tim Colwell led off the game with a triple and scored on the next play when Nick Colwell grounded out.

NDSU tacked on two more in the sixth when Nick Colwell doubled off the top of the wall in right field and scored on Zach Wentz's single. Satzinger blooped a single down the right field line to score Wentz with two outs.

The Bison played small ball and took advantage back-to-back Gopher errors on bunts in a four-run ninth inning. Nick Anderson laced an RBI single into center field and Casper's bunt base hit scored one.

Minnesota left nine runners on base. The Gophers had runners on the corners in the third before a 3-6-1 double play ended the inning, and stranded runners on the corners in the fifth with a strikeout and fly ball.

Freshman right-hander Ben Meyer pitched four innings in his first collegiate start for Minnesota and dropped to 0-2 with the loss. Meyer allowed one run on three hits with one strikeout.

Troy Larson and Matt Halloran had two hits each for Minnesota.

North Dakota State and Minnesota wrap up the two-game set at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, at the Metrodome.
