MINNEAPOLIS - North Dakota State scored four runs with two outs in the eighth inning and completed a two-game series sweep of Minnesota with a 6-5 win in college baseball Wednesday, March 21, at the Metrodome.
John Skrbec hit a two-run single before scoring on Nick Anderson's triple, and Tim Colwell doubled in Anderson with the winning run after Minnesota (9-13) had scored five in the seventh to go ahead.
Kyle Kingsley got his first save of the year with a scoreless eighth and ninth for NDSU (14-5), which won its eighth straight game. Reliever Simon Anderson upped his record to 2-0 with the victory.
NDSU led 1-0 in the second inning when Blake Turbak doubled, moved to second on Max Casper's sac bunt and scored on Nick Anderson's sac fly. It was 2-0 in the third when Colwell hit a leadoff triple and scored one out later on Zach Wentz's double.
Bison starter Luke Anderson cruised through the first six innings with just a pair of walks and a single before the Gophers got back-to-back doubles from Bobby Juan and David Bettenburg to start a five-run seventh inning.
Kurt Schlangen and Michael Handel followed with consecutive singles to put runners on the corners and the Gophers went ahead on a delayed double steal.
Luke Anderson left after the four straight hits and a base on balls, and Simon Anderson got the first two outs before singles by Andy Henkemeyer and Dan Olinger gave Minnesota a 5-2 lead.
Luke Anderson was responsible for all five Gopher runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts in the no-decision. Billy Soule, the third of four Minnesota pitchers, allowed four runs on four hits with two walks in two-thirds of an inning and dropped to 1-2 with the loss.
Colwell was 3-for-5 for the Bison including his sixth double and sixth triple of the year, which ties the NDSU single-season record for triples set by Kenny Beese in 2010 and would be tied for the national lead in the NCAA statistics through March 18.
North Dakota State is scheduled to be off for 10 days before returning to the Metrodome to play North Dakota in a pair of doubleheaders at 5 p.m. Sunday, April 1, and 1 p.m. Monday, April 2.
