GRAND FORKS, N.D. - John Straka had a career-high 11 strikeouts to lead North Dakota State to a 1-0 win over North Dakota in college baseball Friday, March 30, at Kraft Field.
It was the second straight shutout for Straka, who allowed four hits and one walk. He has struck out at least seven in each of his last four starts and is 3-2 on the year.
NDSU improved to 15-5 with its ninth straight victory, matching the longest single-season winning streak in school history by the 1956 NCAA district runner-up team and the 2004 North Central Conference championship team.
Tim Colwell scored the only run in the sixth inning. He hit a two-out infield single, advanced to second on a throwing error, and scored from second when Nick Colwell beat out an infield single.
UND threatened in the eighth when Seth Means hit a leadoff single and moved to second when Michael Anastasi was hit by a pitch. Straka struck out Padraic Getchell and got a groundout from leadoff man Kris Kwak to end the inning.
UND's only other threat came in the first inning when Kwak doubled off the right field wall and got thrown out going for a triple on a perfect relay from Nick Anderson to Max Casper to John Skrbec. Straka retired 10 straight after that.
The Colwells were both 2-for-4 for NDSU and Zach Wentz had the only other Bison hit. Kwak was 2-for-4 for UND and freshman pitcher Andrew Thome (0-4) struck out six in the complete-game loss.
NDSU and UND are scheduled to play a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday, March 31, at Newman Outdoor Field in Fargo before returning to Kraft Field for the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 1.
