The North Dakota State 4x400-meter relay team of Morgan Milbrath, Ashley Tingelstad, Ashley Heinze and Paige Stratioti will run at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., on Saturday, March 15. The women's 4x400m is the final event of the meet, scheduled for 9:20 p.m. (CT) on Saturday.
Milbrath, Tingelstad, Heinze and Stratioti are the first NDSU relay team to advance to the NCAA Division I Championships – indoor or outdoor. The top 12 relay times in the nation are accepted into the meet, and the Bison will enter at No. 9 on the list at 3:34.57.
The women's 4x400m relay will run three heats of four teams apiece, with the Bison racing in the first heat against South Carolina, LSU and Arkansas. Texas enters the national meet with the fastest time in the country this season at 3:30.12, but Florida (3:30.16) and Oregon (3:30.52) are close behind. Oregon ran 3:30.22 to win the title last season.
The top eight finishers this weekend will be named first-team All-Americans by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), and the next four teams will garner second-team All-America status. NDSU has four indoor All-America honors in its Division I era, with Leslie Brost (pole vault, 4th place, 2012) and Laura Hermanson (800m, 7th place, 2009) as the only first-teamers.
The NDSU quartet broke the previous 4x400m relay school record three times in 21 days this season, improving the mark by 6.55 seconds overall. The Bison women are only the third school not from the SEC, Big 12, Pac-12 or Big Ten to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 4x400m relay over the last four seasons.
ESPN3 will stream the meet live on March 14 starting at 6:55 p.m. (CT) and March 15 starting at 6:50 p.m. (CT). A tape delay of the championship will air Saturday, March 22 at 5:30 p.m. (CT) on ESPNU.
