FARGO, N.D. – Wes Satzinger went 3-for-4 with three RBI at the plate and Reed Pfannenstein struck out a career-high six batters on the mound, helping the North Dakota State baseball team (22-24, 10-12 Summit) edge the South Dakota State Jackrabbits (27-27, 11-11 Summit), 4-3, on Saturday afternoon, May 17, in the regular season finale for both teams at Newman Outdoor Field.
The Bison and Jackrabbits are scheduled to meet again Thursday, May 22, at 7 p.m. in Sioux Falls, S.D., in the opening round of The Summit League Baseball Championship, presented by First PREMIER Bank/PREMIER Bankcard. NDSU is the four-seed in the double-elimination tournament while SDSU is the one-seed.
Satzinger, a senior from Andover, Minn., gave the Bison an early 1-0 lead with a one out RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the first inning. Tim Colwell led the inning off with a single up the middle and moved to second on Blake Turbak's sacrifice bunt. A South Dakota State passed ball allowed Colwell to advance to third before he scored on Satzinger's single.
With the Bison clinging to a 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Satzinger hit a one out, two RBI double to increase the NDSU advantage to 3-0. Aiden Hook drew a one out walk and Colwell singled to center to advance Hook to second with one out in the inning. Turbak drew another walk to move Colwell to second and Hook to third, bringing Satzinger to the plate, who laced a 2-0 pitch to deep left field to score Hook and Colwell. A Jackrabbit fielding error with two outs allowed the Bison to add a third run in the inning and increase their lead to 4-0.
Pfannenstein, a freshman from St. Cloud, Minn., allowed no runs or earned runs on five hits in seven innings of work to go along with his career-best six strikeouts to earn the win and improve to 3-1 on the season.
South Dakota State fought back to pull within 4-3 after scoring a trio of runs in the top of the eighth and had a runner on second with two outs in the top of the ninth, but NDSU reliever Brian VanderWoude struck out SDSU's Michael Finocchiaro to secure the Bison win and record his first save of the season.
Aaron Machbitz went 2-for-5 at the plate with an RBI to lead the South Dakota State offense.
South Dakota State's Ryan Froom pitched three innings, allowing four hits and one earned run, to take the loss and fall to 2-2 overall.
