SETTING THE SCENE: The North Dakota State baseball team will open the 2014 Summit League Baseball Championship presented by First PREMIER Bank/PREMIER Bankcard at Sioux Falls Stadium in Sioux Falls, S.D., Thursday, May 22, at 7 p.m. against South Dakota State. The Bison enter the double elimination tournament as the four seed while the Jackrabbits are the one seed.
MEDIA COVERAGE: The first, semifinal and elimination rounds of the tournament will be streamed live at www.TheSummitLeague.org, courtesy of South Dakota State. The championship game(s) Saturday will be broadcast and streamed live by Midco Sports Network with Tom Nieman describing the action and Jay Elsen providing color commentary. All tournament contests will feature live statistics at www.TheSummitLeague.org. All NDSU games in the tournament will also be broadcast live on 96.3 FM KNDS and GoBison.com/allaccess.
THE SERIES: Thursday's Summit League tournament opening round game against the Jacks will be the 160th meeting in the all-time series that dates back to 1956. NDSU trails SDSU in the series, 57-102. The Bison faced South Dakota State May 15-17 in Fargo, splitting a four-game series against the Jackrabbits. NDSU won the opener, 4-2, Thursday, May 15, before dropping a doubleheader Friday, May 16, 5-1 and 6-1. The Bison defeated SDSU, 4-3, in the series finale Saturday, May 17.
THE OPPONENT: South Dakota State enters Thursday's league tournament tilt with an overall record of 27-27. The Jackrabbits finished second in The Summit League with a mark of 11-11, but were awarded the tournament's top seed since Omaha is not eligible for postseason play while it is reclassifying from Division II. Offensively, Aaron Machbitz is hitting .312 and leads the Jacks in hits (64), doubles (13), home runs (7), RBI (33), total bases (98) and slugging percentage (.478) while Sam Pack is hitting a team-high .318. Zach Coppola has stolen a team-high 11 bases in 14 attempts. On the mound, Adam Bray is 5-6 overall with a 2.64 ERA in 95.1 innings of work with two complete games. Bray has given up 28 earned runs on 95 hits while striking out a team-high 87 batters and walking 16. He is holding opposing batters to a .265 average. Overall, South Dakota State is hitting .271 and has a team ERA of 3.65.
WEEKLY HONORS: North Dakota State had eight Summit League award winners this season. Reed Pfannenstein was named the league's co-Pitcher of the week for the week of May 12-18 after recording a career-high six strikeouts against South Dakota State May 17. Kyle Kleinendorst earned his second Player of the Week award after going 9-of-20 (.450) with 11 RBI, eight runs scored, three homers, a double, two walks and a sacrifice fly the week of April 28 - May 4. Parker Trewin was named co-Pitcher of the Week, his second Pitcher of the Week award this season, after tossing an eight inning complete game shutout at Fort Wayne May 3 with seven strikeouts and only one walk while surrendering five hits in the 12-0 NDSU win. Tim Colwell was named co-Player of the Week after going 11-for-16 (.688) with three doubles, four runs-scored and one stolen base in a four-game series against Western Illinois April 18-20. Kleinendorst earned his first Player of the Week award of 2014 when he was named co-Player of the Week after going 7-for-12 (.583) with three triples, two RBIs and five runs scored in a four-game series at Northern Colorado March 7-9. Wes Satzinger was co-Player of the Week after hitting 5-for-11 (.455) in three games at Murray State, where he homered and drove in two runs in a 4-1 win Friday, Feb. 28, and doubled twice with two runs scored in a 3-2 win Saturday, March 1. David Ernst was named Pitcher of the Week after allowing just three singles in seven scoreless innings in the 4-1 win at Murray State. Trewin picked up his inaugural Pitcher of the Week honor after pitching seven innings and striking out a career-best 10 batters with one walk and five hits in the Bison's 13-1 win over Maine March 16.
CATCHING UP WITH THE BISON: Entering Thursday's game with the Jackrabbits, the Bison are 22-24 overall. NDSU finished with a record of 10-12 in Summit League play this season to earn the four seed in the postseason tournament. Offensively, Tim Colwell leads both the team and The Summit League in batting average (.390) and hits (71) and is tied for the lead in triples (4). Along with batting average, hits and triples, Colwell also leads the Bison in at bats (182), runs scored (41), total bases (90) and stolen bases (19). Wes Satzinger is the team and league leader in doubles (18) and on base percentage (.466). He also leads the team in slugging percentage (.542) and has 31 RBI, one triple, two homers and 24 walks. Kyle Kleinendorst is tied for the team and league lead in triples with four and leads the Bison in RBI (37), home runs (3) and walks (25). On the mound, David Ernst is 4-4 with a 3.83 ERA and has pitched three complete games this season. Ernst has allowed 34 earned runs on 89 hits with 34 strikeouts and 26 walks. He is holding opposing batters to a .288 batting average. Relief pitcher Trevor Jaunich has a 3.28 ERA in 24.2 innings of work with 26 punch outs and a team-high six saves. As a team, NDSU is hitting .274 and has a team ERA of 4.59.
NDSU IN THE SUMMIT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT: The Bison have an all-time record of 5-6 in Summit League tournament competition dating back to their first appearance in the 2011 season. This is the fourth consecutive season NDSU has advanced to the tournament. Last season, the Bison posted a 2-2 record in tournament play, winning their opening round contest against Oakland and semifinal tilt with Western Illinois before dropping a pair of games to top seeded South Dakota State in the championship round.
162 AND COUNTING: North Dakota State senior Tim Colwell has started in 162 consecutive games dating back to his freshman season in 2011, ranking him among the national leaders in consecutive games-started. He has started all 46 games this season, 53 games in 2013, 60 in 2012 and made 44 starts out of 47 contests in 2011.
COLWELL SELECTED AS FINALIST FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD: Tim Colwell was one of 10 NCAA baseball student-athletes who excel both on and off the diamond selected Wednesday, April 30, as a finalist for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate baseball To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2014 College World Series® in June.
RECORD BREAKERS: North Dakota State seniors Tim Colwell and Wes Satzinger have set several new NDSU career records this season and continue to move up the all-time record charts in several other categories. Colwell is the new all-time career leader in hits (286), stolen bases (52), stolen base attempts (67), triples (18), at bats (811) and runs scored (169) and is tied for second in sacrifice flies (10). The Shoreview, Minn., native ranks third in games played (206), games started (203) and total bases (370). Satzinger is the new career leader in sacrifice flies (11) and is tied for the lead in doubles (58) and ranks third in hits (219), fourth in at-bats (692), eighth in sac bunts (14), and defensively is fourth in assists (399).
COLWELL TABBED CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT: Tim Colwell was voted to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District first-team, announced Thursday, May 1. This is the third Academic All-District honor of his career. Colwell leads the Bison and The Summit League in batting average, hitting .390, and is tied for the team and league lead in triples with four. A zoology major and Spanish minor, Colwell has a perfect 4.00 grade-point-average and is a two-time Capital One Academic All-America first-team selection. He has been selected to The Summit League Academic Honor Roll, Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence, Academic All-League and Distinguished Scholar list each year possible. He is also one of 10 finalists for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award. With his first-team selection, Colwell advances to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
PRESEASON PICKS: North Dakota State was picked third in The Summit League in a preseason poll of the league's five head coaches. Defending regular season champion Omaha was first, tournament champion South Dakota State was second, Western Illinois fourth and Fort Wayne fifth. NDSU, with 8 of 9 starters back from last year's 26-27 team, was picked as Baseball America's team to beat in its Summit League preview.
FIVE STRAIGHT 20-WIN SEASONS: North Dakota State has reached the 20-win mark five straight seasons and qualified for four straight Summit League tournaments reaching the championship game each of the past two years. This is NDSU's seventh season in The Summit League after three seasons as a Division I independent. The Summit League Baseball Championship presented by First PREMIER Bank/PREMIER Bankcard is scheduled for May 22-24 at Sioux Falls Stadium in Sioux Falls, S.D. The four-team double-elimination tournament will not include Omaha, which is reclassifying from Division II and not eligible for postseason play in baseball until 2016.
THE COACH: North Dakota State head coach Tod Brown (Arizona, 1994) is in his seventh season with a 163-191 record, the second most wins in school history. Brown previously was the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for eight seasons at Bowling Green, where he was part of two division titles and a regular-season title in the Mid-American Conference. Brown began his collegiate coaching career in 1999 as a volunteer assistant at Arizona. He was a left-handed pitcher for the Wildcats under Hall of Fame coach Jerry Kindall and a member of the 1992 Pac-10 champs.
