FARGO, N.D. – JT Core delivered a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the North Dakota State University baseball team (13-26) to an 8-7 win over Mayville State University in front of 386 spectators at Newman Outdoor Field on Wednesday, April 29.
The Bison are scheduled to open a three-game Summit League series against Fort Wayne on Friday, May 1, at 6:30 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field.
With the game tied, 7-7 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, Ben Petersen drew a two-out walk, bringing Core to the plate, who doubled to deep left field on the first pitch he saw, scoring Petersen from first to put the Bison in front, 8-7.
Bison right-hander Kevin Folman was able to work around a lead-off double in the top of the ninth with a pair of ground outs and a strikeout, sealing the victory for North Dakota State.
Core led NDSU offensively for the game, going a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored and the game-winning RBI. Jon Hechtner and Taylor Sanders each drove in a pair of runs, while Drew Fearing collected a team-and game-high three hits in five at bats. Brayden Resch also posted a multi-hit game, recording two hits in three plate appearances.
Folman picked up his first win of the season and improved to 1-0 overall after surrendering no runs or earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts and no walks in two-and two-thirds innings of work.
The Bison jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI single from Hechtner, but Mayville State answered and took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third.
The Comets scored two more runs in the fifth to increase their lead to 4-1, but NDSU scored four runs in the bottom-half of the frame, to gain a 5-4 advantage. Hechtner plated the first run of the inning on a RBI triple to right field, before Petersen and Core worked back-to-back walks, loading the bases. Two straight wild pitches with one out and the bases loaded scored two more runs, and an infield RBI single from Resch plated the go-ahead run for the Bison.
Mayville State answered, though, regaining the lead at 7-5 after scoring three runs in the seventh, but the Bison tied the game in the bottom-half of the inning after a one-out, two RBI pinch-hit single through the left side from Sanders.
Nate Williams went 3-for-5 at the plate with a double to lead the Comet offense, while pitcher Josh Janzen took the loss on the mound for Mayville State after allowing the eventual game-winning run in the eighth inning.
