Bison Welcome Fort Wayne to Newman Outdoor Field for Three-Game Series May 1-3

THIS WEEKEND: The North Dakota State University baseball team (13-26, 5-16 Summit League) will host the Fort Wayne Mastodons (25-16, 12-9 Summit League) in a three-game Summit League series Friday, May 1 - Sunday, May 3 at Newman Outdoor Field. The series opener will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, with games two and three taking place Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
THE SERIES: The three-game series against IPFW will be meetings 34-36 in the all-time series. The Bison hold a narrow 17-16 advantage in the series after dropping two of three games at Fort Wayne April 3-5.
SCOUTING THE MASTODONS: Fort Wayne enters the three-game series with the Bison as the hottest team in The Summit League after winning its past eight games. The Mastodons are 25-16 overall and 12-9 in league action. IPFW is coming off a three-game series sweep at Omaha April 24-26 and a 13-8 non-league win over Goshen on Wednesday. Fort Wayne hasn't dropped a game since April 15. CAREER-MILESTONE: Bison right-handed reliever Brian VanderWoude struck out a career-best seven batters in a career-high five-and two-thirds innings pitched in game one of a doubleheader against Oral Roberts on Saturday, April 18. Eight days later on April 26 in the series finale against Western Illinois, VanderWoude made his first start of the season and only second start of his career. The Burnsville, Minn., native helped the Bison to a 9-4 victory and improved to 2-1 on the mound after scattering eight hits in five innings while striking out two and walking three.
RECORD SETTER: Right-hander David Ernst became the career leader in starts at North Dakota State with 46 after starting on the mound at South Dakota State Friday, April 10. PRESEASON PICKS: Defending Summit League tournament champion North Dakota State was picked to finish fourth in The Summit League in a preseason poll of the league's six head coaches.
