FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State University women's soccer team kicked off the 2015 season with a 2-0 shutout victory over the Viterbo University Hawks in an exhibition match played on a humid Thursday night under the lights at Dacotah Field.
"I thought all in all [the first match] was pretty good," NDSU head coach Mark Cook said. "The first-half was a little sloppy. I think it was nerves and energy and kind of excitement to get out there, and I thought we made some mistakes we shouldn't be making, but in the second-half the rhythm was really pretty good, and we created a lot of chances. All in all, it was a really good effort."
Britney Monteon and Roxy Roemer scored the two goals for the Bison, while Amy Yang and Holly Enderle each dished out an assist.
NDSU goalkeepers Sierra Bonham and Jenna Zaeske combined to post the shutout between the pipes, with Bonham picking up the win.
Monteon netted the first goal of the match for the Bison in the fifth minute after she controlled a pass from Yang near midfield and broke away from the Viterbo defense, scoring with a shot from close range to the lower left corner of the net.
North Dakota State upped its advantage to 2-0 when Roemer tapped in a short pass from Enderle in front of the goal in the 78th-minute.
NDSU is scheduled to travel to Lawrence, Kan., for an exhibition match against the Kansas Jayhawks at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16.
