NDSU Soccer Rallies Late, but Falls to No. 14 Wisconsin in Overtime Sunday, 2-1

MADISON, Wis. – The North Dakota State University women's soccer team (0-2-0) scored a late goal to force overtime, but fell to the No. 14-ranked Wisconsin Badgers (2-0-0), 2-1, on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 23, in front of 520 spectators at McClimon Sports Complex in Madison.
"We competed the entire game," NDSU head coach Mark Cook said. "We came out early and we were confident we could compete. It was a great effort for us, and it will help motivate us to be successful moving forward."
After Wisconsin took a 1-0 lead 24 minutes into the match, Lauren Miller netted the equalizing goal for the Bison in the 82nd-minute with a strike from close range off passes from Roxy Roemer and Britney Monteon.
The Bison defense held the Badgers scoreless the remaining eight minutes of regulation to force overtime.
NDSU nearly netted the game-winning goal twice in the extra frame, but Miller's shot in the 94th-minute hit the crossbar and Holly Enderle's strike seconds later was saved at the goal line by Wisconsin goalkeeper Caitlyn Clem.
The Badgers' Rose Lavelle, who was ranked the No. 2 collegiate women's soccer player by Top Drawer Soccer entering the season, netted a goal from 20 yards out with 19 seconds remaining in overtime, securing the victory for Wisconsin.
NDSU goalkeeper Sierra Bonham made six saves, going the full 99 minutes, 41 seconds between the pipes, but took the loss to fall to 0-2-0 on the season.
For the match, North Dakota State was outshot by Wisconsin, 24-13, but tallied a 5-4 advantage over the Badgers in corner kicks taken.
The Bison are scheduled to return to the pitch on Friday, Aug. 28, when they host St. Cloud State in the 2015 home opener at Dacotah Field.
