STANFORD, Calif. – Sophomore Payton Otterdahl matched the NDSU discus record which stood for 31 years to lead a day of strong performances by the North Dakota State men's track & field team on Friday.
Otterdahl tied Mike Stratton's 1985 school record in the discus, throwing 175-9 (53.57m) to finish third at the Stanford Invitational. The 31-year-old record was one of the oldest in the NDSU men's track & field program.
Otterdahl (Rosemount, Minn.) now ranks among the top 40 in the NCAA this season in the event. He captured the USA junior national title and the Pan American Junior championship in the discus last summer.
Also at Stanford, junior Conrad Schwarzkopf added 10 feet to his previous personal-best in the hammer throw, hitting 196-1 (59.76m) to rank fifth in NDSU history. Sophomore Steffan Stroh improved his own career-best by more than 14 feet, throwing 195-11 (59.72m) to stand at No. 6 on the NDSU all-time list.
The Bison men had a strong showing in the invitational section of the javelin, as all four athletes with NDSU ties finished in the top 12. NDSU alum and current volunteer assistant coach Riley Dolezal took runner-up honors at 253-10 (77.36m) in his first meet of the season. Bison junior Matti Mortimore took fourth place with a mark of 235-7 (71.80m), sophomore Austin Schmidt placed sixth at 220-2 (67.12m), and senior Quinn Baumann was 12th with a throw of 206-8 (62.99m).
Senior Jerome Begin took fifth in the 400m hurdles at Stanford, finishing in 52.73 – the fastest time he has ever run for a 400m hurdles season opener. In the 110m hurdles, Begin (14.49) and fellow senior Parker McKittrick (14.62) both advanced to the finals to be held on Saturday.
Bison sophomore Landon Jochim finished 11th in the 400m dash in 48.14, and junior Jonah Warwick clocked 48.65 for the second-fastest 400m of his career.
Senior Brendan Skime ran a Summit League-leading 9:07.27 in the 3,000m steeplechase at Stanford.
At the San Francisco State Distance Carnival, sophomore Brant Gilbertson ran a PR of 9:11.11 in the 3,000m steeplechase, ranking him eighth all-time at NDSU. Gilbertson cut seven seconds off his previous top time in the event.
Junior Dalton Herding ran 1:51.96 in the 800m – the second-fastest time of his career and fast enough to be ranked No. 2 in The Summit League this season.
Redshirt freshman Derek Warner led a group of Bison men in the 1500m, running 3:58.08 for a new personal-best time. Redshirt freshman Branden Scheel ran the 10,000m in 31:38.56 – a pace of 5:05 per mile.
NDSU will conclude competition at both meets on Saturday.
