Jackson Sparks NDSU Women with Two Titles on Opening Day of Summit League Championships

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Senior Rose Jackson set the Summit League record and the North Dakota State school record to win the pentathlon, then came back several hours later to win the long jump title as well, headlining a day of strong performances by the Bison women's track & field team on the opening day of the Summit League Indoor Championships.
The Bison women won four of the five events completed on Friday, taking an early lead in the team standings. NDSU has 77 points after the first day, South Dakota is second with 54, and South Dakota State is third with 38.
Jackson totaled 4,077 points to win the pentathlon, breaking All-American Whitney Carlson's record of 4,015 points established at the 2011 conference meet. She surpassed the previous Summit League meet record of 4,027 points set by Sami Spenner of Omaha in 2014.
Jackson posted career-best performances in the 60m hurdles (9.05 seconds) and the 800m (2:15.34), as well as recording the second-best shot put mark of her career at 41-08.00 (12.70m). She also set a new facility record in the long jump, leaping 19-08.00 (5.99m).
Jackson nearly duplicated that record in the final event of the day, winning the long jump with a mark of 19-07.50 (5.98m).
In between her two championships, Jackson also qualified for tomorrow's 60m dash final in 7.78 seconds and the 200m dash final in 24.85.
Bison senior Katelyn Weimerskirch won her third consecutive Summit League championship in the weight throw, throwing 65-00.00 (19.81m) to lead a dominant effort that saw the NDSU women score 31 team points in the event. NDSU finished 1-2-3-5-7-8, with redshirt freshman Maddy Nilles and junior Courtney Pasiowitz taking second and third, respectively, to fill the awards stand with Bison.
Bailey Retzlaff finished fifth, Jordyn Thornton was seventh, and Shelby Gunnells took eighth in the weight throw.
The Bison women scored 19 team points in the pentathlon, as freshman Macy Denzer (3,578) placed fourth, junior Amanda Levin (3,388) took sixth, and sophomore Maea Wall (3,239) was eighth.
Taylor Janssen, Amy Andrushko, Jenny Guibert and Kayla Huhnerkoch ran away with the Summit League distance medley relay title in 11:50.01. The quartet now ranks seventh-fastest all-time at NDSU.
Levin ended a busy day with a personal-best leap of 19-00.75 (5.81m) for a fourth-place finish in the long jump. NDSU junior Piper Jensen was eighth at 17-09.50 (5.42m). Bison sophomore Annika Rotvold contributed to the team scoring, placing eighth in the 3,000m in 9:54.60.
The Bison women advanced multiple qualifiers to tomorrow's finals in the 200m, 400m, 800m and 60m hurdles.
Morgan Milbrath clocked a personal-best 24.39 in the 200m dash prelims, making her the fastest qualifier to the final and No. 4 all-time at NDSU in the event. Alexis Woods (personal-best 24.79) advanced as the third-fastest qualifier, and Jackson was fourth.
The Bison qualified four to the finals in the 400m dash, led by Milbrath in 54.54 and Woods in 55.04. Freshman Tara Smart and Levin also advanced. Andrushko, Janssen and Guibert all advanced to Saturday's finals of the 800m. Andrushko was the fastest qualifier at 2:11.00.
Freshman Macy Denzer (8.96) and sophomore Dakota Wood (9.07) raced their way into the 60m hurdles final.
Men's heptathlon competition resumes at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. Field events start at 11:30 a.m., and running events begin at 1 p.m. NDSU is aiming to win its 10th consecutive Summit League indoor women's team championship.
