TEMPE, Ariz. – North Dakota State senior Matti Mortimore showcased his potential to be one of the NCAA's top javelin throwers, headlining the performances of the Bison men's track & field team on Saturday at Arizona State's Baldy Castillo Invitational.
Mortimore registered an NCAA-leading throw and a new javelin school record of 253-1 (77.15m) to win the event and lead a Bison sweep of the top three places. He added more than four feet to his previous school-record mark.
Mortimore is the reigning British national champion in the javelin and a two-time NCAA All-American in the event. Saturday's throw would have placed him third at the NCAA Championships last year.
Alex Renner, another All-American for the Bison, came within one inch of his outdoor school record in the shot put, throwing 62-03.25 (18.98m) for first place. One week into the outdoor season, he ranks No. 2 in the nation.
Bison junior Austin Schmidt had the second-best javelin throw of his career, going 226-6 (69.05m) to take second place and rank among the top 10 in the NCAA this year. Freshman Brendan Artley (North Vancouver, B.C.) completed the 1-2-3 javelin sweep for NDSU, throwing 219-7 (66.93m). Artley ranks eighth in NDSU history after just one collegiate meet.
One day after recording a personal-best mark in the hammer throw, NDSU junior Steffan Stroh registered a personal-best in the shot put. He threw 59-09.50 (18.22m) to finish fifth in the meet and move up to fourth all-time at NDSU in the event. Stroh also claimed a seventh-place finish in the discus.
NDSU senior Conrad Schwarzkopf placed eighth in the shot put, and senior Brian Blasey was only one inch shy of matching his outdoor personal-best at 54-05.25 (16.59m) for 10th place. Redshirt freshman Michael Keogan entered the Bison all-time Top 10 at No. 10 with his mark of 53-08.50 (16.37m).
Sophomore Jacob Richter had a strong outdoor debut in the 400m dash, running 48.86 for 14th place. Junior Aron Klos clocked 49.76.
NDSU will return to competition at the UC Riverside Spring Track Classic on March 23-25.
