Senior thrower Alex Renner will represent the North Dakota State University men's track & field team at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Friday, Mar. 10, in College Station, Texas.
Renner qualified as one of the nation's top 16 performers in the shot put this season, ranking 12th with his personal-best and school-record throw of 63-00.25 (19.21m). Competition begins at 7:20 p.m. CT on Friday evening at Gilliam Indoor Stadium.
Renner's NCAA Rank: 12th
Renner's NDSU All-Time Rank: 1st
Personal Best: 63-00.25 (19.21m)
Competition Format
Each competitor in the shot put is allowed three attempts in the preliminary round. The nine best marks, after tie-breaking, will advance to the final and earn three more throws.
All-America Honors
The top eight finishers in all events will earn first team All-American honors, and places 9 through 16 will be named second team All-Americans.
Outdoor All-American
Renner earned second-team All-America status outdoor in 2016, placing 14th in the shot put at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. Another All-America honor this week would make Renner only the second NDSU men's track & field athlete to earn multiple Division I All-America honors, joining Matti Mortimore.
Top Placer
Andy Lillejord is the highest indoor national-meet finisher in NDSU's Division I history, taking seventh place in the heptathlon at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships.
Consistency Shows
Renner has 15 throws in the shot put further than the next-best Summit League athlete this season – his NDSU teammate, Payton Otterdahl. Renner owns the 23 best marks in NDSU history in the indoor shot put.
Multiple Events
In addition to owning the top shot put mark in NDSU history, Renner also ranks No. 2 all-time at NDSU in the weight throw. Outdoors, he holds the NDSU school record in the shot put and ranks fourth in school history in the hammer throw.
