LONG BEACH, Calif. – The North Dakota State women's track & field team broke a pair of school records in the throwing events on Friday at the Beach Invitational hosted by Long Beach State.
Junior Alyssa Olin (Mott, N.D.) broke the NDSU javelin record by more than three feet, throwing 174-5 (53.18m). It was a new personal-best mark by five feet and ranks her seventh in the NCAA this season. Olin took second place in the meet behind the NCAA leader, Rebekah Wales of LSU.
Senior Katelyn Weimerskirch extended the school record in the hammer for the second day in a row and the third time in seven days. Her mark of 204-8 (62.38m) was the top by a collegian in the meet and ranks 17th in the nation.
At the Mt. SAC Relays in Torrance, Calif., NDSU senior Taylor Janssen trimmed 18 seconds off her personal-best in the 3,000m steeplechase, winning her section in 10:10.14. Janssen moved up to No. 3 in NDSU history and No. 9 in the NCAA this year in the event. Only All-Americans Erin Teschuk and Maddie Van Beek have run the steeplechase faster in a Bison uniform.
Sophomore Maddy Nilles finished 10th overall and fourth among collegiate athletes in the hammer at Long Beach State, posting a mark of 196-2 (59.79m).
Bison sophomore Shelby Gunnells added a personal-best performance, throwing 183-8 (55.99m) to rank eighth all-time at NDSU in the event. Redshirt freshman Bailey Retzlaff (Carrington, N.D.) moved to No. 10 all-time at NDSU in the hammer, throwing 182-8 (55.69m).
Senior Sydney Bork entered the NDSU all-time Top 10 in the 3000m steeplechase at No. 8, clocking a time of 11:22.05.
