DES MOINES, Iowa – Junior Alyssa Olin claimed the Drake Relays title in the javelin, highlighting a cold, wet and windy first day of competition for the North Dakota State women's track & field team on Friday.
Olin posted a throw of 155-4 (47.34m) to take first place, and the Bison women finished 1-2 with junior Kayla Hochhalter in second at 148-7 (45.28m). It was the second straight year the NDSU women captured the javelin crown, with Sierra Rosenau winning last season.
Olin and the rest of the Bison women battled less-than-ideal conditions: temperatures around 40 degrees with steady rain and wind for most of the day.
"You make the best of it," said Olin. "Coming from Fargo, we are more used to weather like this. You make the most of it, and just do what you can."
Olin was in control from the start, claiming the lead with her first throw and posting three marks further than any other competitor.
"Everyone wants to win," she said. "I was hoping to win, and everything worked out for me in the end. I'm really grateful for it."
"It's so much fun, especially with Kayla (Hochhalter), because we boost each other up. We know what gets each other pumped, and we cheer each other on. It's awesome taking first and second."
NDSU nearly claimed another title in the throwing events. Senior Katelyn Weimerskirch was the Drake Relays runner-up in the discus, throwing 167-7 (51.09m).
The Bison women advanced to the finals of the 4x400m and 4x100m relays, racing in tough conditions on Friday afternoon. The Bison were the second-fastest qualifier to the 4x400m final, with Lexi Woods, Morgan Milbrath, Amanda Levin and Rose Jackson clocking 3:41.01.
Jackson, Milbrath, Gabby Grommesh and Woods qualified eighth to the final in the 4x100m relay, running 46.72. Both finals are scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Drake Stadium.
Jenny Guibert, Kayla Huhnerkoch, Annika Rotvold and Taylor Janssen ran 9:01.15 in the 4x800m relay to finish seventh in the meet and rank 10th in NDSU history.
At the Kip Janvrin Open in Indianola, Iowa, redshirt freshman Maea Wall ran a personal-best 15.25 seconds in the 100m hurdles. Freshman Macy Denzer took fourth in the 400m dash in 59.17, and sophomore Dakota Wood placed fourth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:03.69.
Junior Piper Jensen finished second in the long jump (17-10.25) and third in the triple jump (36-03.50).
Competition will continue at the Drake Relays on Saturday.
