Nilles Headed to NCAA Championships for First Time

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – North Dakota State junior thrower Maddy Nilles earned her first career NCAA Championships berth on Saturday, taking eighth place in the hammer throw at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in Sacramento.
Nilles recorded a throw of 204-4 (62.29m) on her third and final attempt to secure a top-12 finish and punch her ticket to Eugene, Ore., for the national meet. Nilles' second throw of 203-1 (61.90m) also would have been enough to qualify.
NDSU's Shelby Gunnells, Amy Herrington and Bailey Retzlaff all outperformed their pre-meet rankings in the hammer throw. Gunnells finished 19th after entering ranked 24th, throwing 197-1 (60.08m). As the No. 25 seed, Herrington took 20th place with her toss of 196-8 (59.94m). Retzlaff was 28th with a mark of 186-11 (56.97m).
Bison senior Piper Jensen concluded her career with a 38th-place finish in the triple jump, leaping 40-7 (12.37m). She ends her collegiate career ranked third in NDSU history in the event.
Nilles joins NDSU senior Alyssa Olin (javelin) as the Bison women's representatives at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore, on June 6-9.
