MACOMB, Ill. – Redshirt freshman Brendan Artley and sophomore Alex Talley captured throwing event titles on the opening day of the Summit League Outdoor Championships, helping the Bison men's track & field team to a healthy margin in the team race after Wednesday.
Artley claimed first place in the javelin, throwing a personal-best 226-0 (68.89m) to rank fifth all-time at NDSU. He ranks 27th in the NCAA this season.
Talley won the Summit League hammer throw title with a personal-best and meet record of 218-0 (66.46m), ranking 25th in the NCAA this year.
The Bison men finished 1-2-5-6-7 in the javelin for 27 team points. Redshirt freshman Benji Phillips was the conference runner-up with a mark of 208-4 (63.51m). Sophomore Ty Ogren was fifth, freshman Kristoffer Thomsen took sixth, and sophomore Tony Ukkelberg placed seventh.
NDSU racked up 24 team points in the hammer with a 1-3-5-6-8 finish. Behind Talley's title, junior Michael Keogan earned all-league honors in third with a throw of 197-1 (60.07m). Jacob Slate finished fifth, Payton Otterdahl placed sixth, and Tristan Bush was eighth.
The Bison men stand first, second and third in the decathlon through the five events on Wednesday. Tony Ukkelberg, the leader at 3,798 points, and Ben Klimpke – currently second with 3,700 – both posted the second-best Day 1 scores of their career. Ryan Enerson is in third with 3,667 points, Tyler Enerson stands in sixth, and Daniel Asa is seventh.
NDSU is first in the team standings with 51 points, North Dakota is second with 11, and South Dakota State is third with nine points.
