DAYTON, Ohio - The North Dakota State baseball team scored multiple runs in three innings Saturday, as the Bison beat Dayton 9-1.
NDSU moved to 9-3 on the year, the best 12 game start in the NCAA Division I era for the Bison and the best start since the 2002 team was 10-2. Dayton dropped to 3-9 on the year. The two teams will play the third game of the four game set on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m. (Central).
Bennett Hostetler and
Will Busch led the Bison with three hits apiece, while
Zach Solano had two hits.
Garret Hill and Busch each scored twice, while Solano drove in a pair of runs. Hostetler stole a career-high four bases.
Jake Malec extended his hitting streak to 11 games.
Evan Sankey improved to 3-0 on the mound in 6.1 innings of work. He allowed a run on three hits, while striking out seven.
Wyatt Nelson tossed the final 2.2 innings, striking out two.
The Bison started the scoring in the third inning, as a ground ball by
Peter Brookshaw brought in
Calen Schwabe. A single to right by Hostetler plated Malec, giving NDSU a 2-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Busch doubled to left center, as Hill scored. Busch then scored on a ground ball by
Jack Simonsen. In the seventh, Hostetler and Brookshaw each stole a base, while Brookshaw scored on a throwing error during the play. With the bases loaded, Solano singled to bring in Hill and Hostetler. The final NDSU runs came as Schwabe reached on an error, allowing Solano and Busch to score. The Flyers added a sacrifice fly in the seventh for their lone run.
