
Nilles Takes NCAA Lead, Extends School Record in Hammer Throw

WICHITA, Kan. – North Dakota State senior thrower Maddy Nilles claimed the nation's top mark and extended her own school record in the hammer throw on Friday evening at Wichita State's Shocker Spring Invitational.
Friday marked Nilles's first outdoor meet as a Bison since she earned first-team All-America honors in the hammer throw at the NCAA Championships in June 2018. She redshirted the 2019 outdoor season, and the 2020 outdoor season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nilles recorded a mark of 220-5 (67.19m) to top the NCAA performance list this season. She added more than two feet to her previous school record.
NDSU junior Kari Wolfe threw a personal-best 173-4 (52.84m) to win the javelin, ranking second all-time at NDSU and top-10 in the NCAA this year.
Bison senior Shelby Gunnells recorded a hammer throw personal-best of 206-6 (62.94m) in her return – an improvement of six feet over her previous best. She ranks sixth in NDSU history.
The NDSU women finished 1-3-4-5 in the hammer throw with Gunnells third, Tasha Willing fourth (193-4 / 58.93m), and Rebecca Tomann fifth (190-3 / 57.98m). Tomann entered the NDSU all-time top 10 with her mark.
Jennie Baragar-Petrash won the 1500m in her NDSU outdoor debut, clocking 4:25.39 to rank fifth in school history. Senior Annika Rotvold took second in 4:28.90.
Freshman Hayley Schmidt (Stanley, N.D.) threw the javelin 146-9 (44.73m) in her Bison debut, ranking ninth in school history.
Kaleesa Houston took runner-up honors in the 5,000m, clocking a personal-best 17:36.00.
