NDSU Baseball Splits Series Opener with Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. - The North Dakota State baseball team earned a doubleheader split with Omaha on Friday, as the Mavericks won the opener 15-4 in seven innings before the Bison took the nightcap 8-2.

NDSU moved to 17-7 on the year and 6-3 in the Summit League, while Omaha is 9-13 overall and 4-2 in league play. The two teams will play again on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. at Tal Anderson Field in Omaha.

With 28 mph winds blowing out, the long ball was key in the opener. The two teams combined for seven home runs, with five of them coming for the Mavericks. Seven different Bison players had a hit, including home runs from Jake Malec and Charley Hesse. Bennett Hostetler had his 15 game hitting streak snapped in the opener. After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, NDSU scored three runs in the fourth, highlighted by Hesse's two-run home run. Omaha scored six runs in the fourth inning on a pair of home runs, including a two-out grand slam. Malec hit his home run in the fifth, cutting the Omaha lead to 8-4. The Mavericks scored three runs in the fifth and four in the sixth for the run-rule victory.

Cade Feeney suffered the loss on the mound, as he dropped to 3-1 on the year. Feeney tied a career-high with seven strikeouts over four innings, while allowing eight runs on nine hits and three walks. Thomas Bruchu struck out one in an inning, while allowing three runs on four hits. Barron Holtz had a strikeout and a walk in an inning, giving up four runs on four hits.

NDSU opened the nightcap with five runs in the top of the first and never looked back. A bases loaded walk by Hesse started the scoring before Zach Solano drove in a pair with a double down the left field line. Nick Emanuel doubled to center to give NDSU a 5-0 lead as Solano scored. The Mavericks scored a run in the first and a run in the second, but NDSU answered in the third with another bases loaded walk, as Calen Schwabe brought in Tucker Rohde. In the fifth, Emanuel doubled to right to bring in Hesse before Schwabe singled up the middle to plate Emanuel for the final run.

Peter Brookshaw and Emanuel each had two hits to lead the Bison, while Rohde and Hesse each scored twice. Solano and Emanuel each drove in two runs. Evan Sankey tossed the first complete game of the year for the Bison, as he struck out eight in seven innings. Sankey allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits and a walk.
