KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – North Dakota State senior
Maddy Nilles extended her school record in the hammer throw by nearly four feet, headlining the efforts of the Bison women's track & field team on the opening day of the Tennessee Relays.
Nilles threw 224-3 (68.35m) to be the top collegiate finisher in the meet and take second place overall. Her new personal-best ranks third on the NCAA performance list this season in the hammer throw.
Nilles's previous record in the hammer was 220-5 (67.19m), set in the season opener on March 26.
Bison senior
Shelby Gunnells took sixth in the hammer throw at 201-6 (61.43m), and
Tasha Willing registered a career-best 201-2 (61.33m) for seventh place. Willing became the seventh woman in NDSU history to surpass 200 feet in the hammer, with all seven coming since 2017.

Jenna Kes stands in seventh place after the opening day of the Tennessee Relays heptathlon, scoring 2,858 points through four events.
