FARGO, N.D. - North Dakota State and South Dakota State split a Summit League baseball doubleheader Friday at Newman Outdoor Field, with the Bison taking the opener 7-4 before SDSU won the nightcap 5-0.
The Bison are now 34-15 overall and 18-11 in Summit League play, while South Dakota State moved to 12-26 overall and 7-15 in league play. The victory in the opener was the 168th Summit League win for NDSU Head Coach
Tod Brown, as he moved into second in league history in league wins. The two teams will play the third game of the weekend series on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. at Newman Outdoor Field.
Bennett Hostetler tied a career-high with four hits in the opener, while
Tucker Rohde had three. It was the 24th multi-hit game of the season for Hostetler. The game was the 212th career game played for Hostetler, setting a new school record. He also moved into fourth in school history with 217 career hits.
Charley Hesse and
Jack Simonsen each had a pair of hits. Hostetler scored three runs, while
Peter Brookshaw crossed the plate twice. Rohde drove in a career-high four runs, while Hesse brought in a pair. The Bison went over 300 runs scored for the season for just the eighth time in school history.
Tristen Roehrich picked up his first win as a Bison on the mound, as he improved to 1-1 on the year in five innings of work. Roehrich allowed four runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out a pair.
Gabe Pilla struck out three in three innings, while allowing two walks and a hit.
Parker Harm earned his league-leading eighth save of the season, striking out the side in the ninth inning. His eight saves this season are tied for the second most in school history.
NDSU opened the scoring in the third inning as Rohde singled to right center to bring in Hostetler and Brookshaw. The Jacks scored four runs in the fourth inning before NDSU took the lead for good in the fifth. Rohde doubled down the right field line to bring in Hostetler and Brookshaw to tie the game. With two outs,
Nick Emanuel singled up the middle to bring in Rohde for the go-ahead run. In the sixth, Hesse doubled down the left field line to bring in Hostetler and
Jake Malec.
Zach Solano had two hits for NDSU in the nightcap, while Hesse had the other.
Max Loven suffered the loss on the mound, allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk in six innings. Loven struck out four.
Wyatt Nelson struck out two, while allowing two runs on two hits in the final inning. The Bison pitching staff went over 400 strikeouts on the season for just the second time in school history.
SDSU scored two runs in the second and added a third in the sixth. The final two runs came on a full count, two-out home run in the seventh inning.
