DENVER, Colo. – The North Dakota State soccer team fell to Oral Roberts 2-1 after extra time Friday night in the opening round of the Summit League Championships at the University of Denver Soccer Stadium.
In the 106
th minute, Oral Roberts would have a shot hit the post that was initially held off the line by
Kelsey Kallio, but Kennedy Langebartels would get a toe to the ball and get it over the line to put the Golden Eagles in front.
The Bison had the strong early chances, including a shot from
Kelsey Kallio that forced a tough save, but it was Oral Roberts who took the lead with the first goal on a counter attack in the 32
nd minute.
Samantha See headed a ball in from close range to put the Golden Eagles in front. Langebartels played a ball to the left side and Kristi Keller sent a cross in to See, who headed the ball into the right corner from inside the 6-yard box.
The Bison would continue to create chances and out shot Oral Roberts 6-4 at the break, but the Golden Eagles would lead at halftime.
However, almost straight out of the halftime break,
Paige Goaley capitalized on a deflection and leveled the game at 1-1 just 50 seconds into the half.
Lavin Douglass played a long ball forward from the left side of midfield that was attempted to be cleared by Louisa Ramsauer but Goaley deflected the ball from close range and the ball bounced nicely to the junior, as she tucked it away for her team leading seventh goal of the season.
The Bison would have a couple more chances with shots from
Jess Hanley and Kallio forcing saves and narrowly missing, but NDSU was unable to get the go-ahead goal and the game would head to extra time.
Both teams would have an opportunity in the first period of extra, but neither side would be able to get a shot on goal as Oral Roberts's shot was blocked and NDSU's shot sailed over the bar.
With the loss, NDSU's season comes to an end. NDSU will finish the season at 8-9-3 with a 4-5-0 record in Summit League play.
